So, I was recently browsing the newest entries on this little site we call DA, and I have discovered how generic some of the "art" on here is becoming. It concers me, and is a dangereous issue to dig into, as art can be of any form. However, I have a few concers on the debate about what art really is.
The one "art" piece that came up most often that I don't really see as worthy submission, is the constant submission of self-shots, in the "MySpace" style (that is, camera held at strange angles, showing the camera holder's face). Can this really be considered art? Sure, it's artistic. At least, it was when the first person did it for the first time. But it has become soo generic, that it seems as though people go out of their way to take this style of picture, simply for submitting here on good ol' DA.
One point that bothers me is when you go to check your recent submissions by your friends here, you see say, 30 new, and you get excited, thinking their is some genuine thought out (or spontaneous) art work with effort being put into it. And when you get there, boom! Its full of picture from the same deviant, all posted within an hour of each other. I personally started simply deleting these as soon as I see them, and am to the point when all I see that I can do is simply delete the deviant from my friends list.
It's too bad too, as some of the deviant post some well done art. But their gallery is overflown with generic pictures of themselves in the classic "emo" pose.
It doesen't help that this art is being encouraged, with the admiries of this favorite-ing nearly every photo of this style they can. Thus, when the photo style is encouraged, more people do it, simply to get a favorite.
Am I alone in this frame of mind? I doubt it. So, to all of those overflowing DA with the same picture of youself from different angles, at least put them in the scraps if nothing else. Maybe you'll eventully get one that no one has done before. But this is an artists forum, where art is everything. Where people to come to show a bit of themselves. Not copying an already much-over-used type of pictorial shot that I'm sure everyone has seen before. This is deviantART, not MySpace. That is all.
